Optical Alliance, in conjunction with the University of Johannesburg, Optometry Department, hosted a Charity Golf Day at the Observatory Golf Club on Wednesday, 18 July 2018.

This day was organised in memory of the 100th birthday celebration of President Nelson Mandela.  Three children’s homes were invited for eye screening at the venue.  Optometrists and Suppliers participated in a sponsored golf day, to raise funds for our three charities.

On the 18th July, the first twenty children from the Maria Kloppers Home arrived at 9:00, and kept themselves busy on the jumping castle sponsored by Falcon Labs, playing soccer, had face painting done and received several snack packs sponsored by Cooper Vision, Falcon Labs, MediQuip, Cell C and  NuMetro. The last kids left the venue by 16:30, after they were given lunch (Kentucky sponsored by Falcon Labs, Juice sponsored by Hoosain Moola, private practice Springs).  UJ sponsored Pizza, which kept the little tummies from rumbling before lunch.

During the course of the day, optometry students screened the kids on autorefractors supplied by Eurotech Optical Suppliers. They were examined by optometrists, Faiza Dawood (private practice Amalgam JHB), Ingrid Metsing (UJ), Ntombi Zitha (private practice Centurion, Pretoria), Olga Manitshana (private practice Soweto),  Shaym Narsi (private practice Rosettenville), Yasmin Ahmed (private practice Sandton), Yumna Mahomed (private practice Florida), and Zaheera Dadoo (private practice Fourways).  Seventy -nine children, ranging from the age of eighteen months to eighteen years were tested and thirty-nine will be supplied with free frames (sponsored by iWear House, Safilo and Sightique) and free optical lenses (sponsored by Hoya).  Each child also received a free pair of quality Polaroid sunglasses (sponsored by Damar Optical).

This day was supported by optical and non-optical companies, playing golf, sponsoring holes and prizes for the day.  Hole sponsors: Cooper Vision, Healthbridge, iWear House, NuPay, Pictech Vision, Safilo, Torga Optical and Zeiss.

Four ball sponsors: BBGR, Harris Valoyi Consultancy, Hoya, iWear House, NuPay, Pictech Vision, Safilo, Sightique, Torga Optical, Winlaw Optical and Younger Optical.  Prize sponsors: Safilo, NuPay, Rudy Project, Observatory Golf Club, Pictech Vision, Torga Optical, Timeshare Traders and Zeiss.

Great fun was had at the auction of rare memorabilia, such as a match cricket ball signed by Ricky Ponting during the test in 2005, a match rugby ball, Blue bulls Thembelani Bholi’s match jersey, a signed Stormers rugby jersey, all sponsored and compiled by Coenie Beukes.

We are pleased to announce that R40 000 was raised for the Children’s Homes, which will be donated when the spectacles are dispensed. In addition, a blanket pack will be given to each child which was initiated and managed by Roelize Meyer from ARC personnel.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
